However, the proliferation of digital recording technology and the long life of the modern "permanent record" can have a chilling effect on protest. Every so often, there's news of police or other officials using video and photo cameras to record protesters for no real reason. Maybe there's nothing to fear, but I sympathize with people who would rather remain anonymous. In the end, I would rather they protest in masks than not protest at all.
